“Every time I see some pictures on people’s walls, I picture happy workers, their loved ones, and friends. Yet, I always have another idea that, consciously or unconsciously, causes me to pray for the individual who may have made a poor decision.”
These are the words of Esther Katiba, a lawyer who says the move is primarily good, but occasionally, someone makes a terrible move. “What should you do to prevent making bad professional decisions?”
1. Be clear on your career growth path so you don’t move around aimlessly.
2. Consult your mentors on career change decisions you wish to make.
3. Ask yourself what is in the job for you before you accept an offer. How does the role challenge you to grow, and if so, is it in the direction you had envisioned in your plan?

4. Conduct a thorough background check on the Business stability, Leadership, Culture, Turnover rates, Employee Wellness, Practices around Work – life balance/Integration, Promotion, and the Growth ladder.
5. Contact former employees to get honest feedback on the work environment.
6. Observe and do not ignore the red flags you see during interviews. If they cannot decide to hire or not to hire, they interview you for one role and days later, they change to another.
7. During your physical interviews, take time to walk around the business (If permitted), ask to be taken around and keenly observe how things are done. Wisely listen to the business performance, employee satisfaction tone and language the employees use.

8. Ask hard questions during your interview related to business performance, turnover rate, departmental structure, organizational structure, and challenges you are expected to come and handle, whether it is a new role or a backfill. If a backfill, why did the other person leave? Dig into policies around Leave, Performance management, promotion, succession and planning.
9. Go online and search for the business rating. Sites like Glassdoor will be helpful. Don’t ignore what you see online; you need that information to make informed decisions.

10. Above all, pray for God’s will. Not all lucrative jobs are good for you. Ask for His will and don’t ignore that still small voice. Sometimes God may allow you into a tough job for a brief divine assignment, and your impact will be great. Other times, he will warn you ahead of time.
