Moi University’s Acting Vice-Chancellor of Prof. Kiplagat Kotut has promised to pull the institution out of the woods.
Speaking at the launch of the university’s second phase of renewable energy project, Prof. Kotut insisted that they have identified the problems affecting the institution and are ready to take painful but fruitful measures.

“We have challenges. Who doesn’t have challenges? We shouldn’t be seen differently. We are the ones who are going to fix these problems,” Prof. Kotut
The Vice-Chancellor assured all education stakeholders that the university’s operations are on as usual despite the storms they are facing.
“People think that we are heading to the grave. Some think we died a long time ago. One of the recovery strategies is to work with partners. In partnership, you defy mathematical logic,” the scholar stated.

Speaking about the recent development where Moi University sacked 900 of its staff, Prof. Kiplagat Kotut said difficult decisions had to be made to reverse the situation in the university.
“This process of fixing the problems will be painful at some point. It will hurt a few of us, but if we must save all of us in the process, then it is worthwhile doing it,” Prof. Kotut stated.
“Once we come out of the problems, even those we may have been hurt, we can still say there is still something for you here, but now we can do it because we are not depending on anybody,” the VC added.

Moi University has been crippled with financial constraints that have interrupted normal operations in the institution. Long strikes from lecturers and other staff of the institution have in the past months affected the normal learning calendar for the university.
Prof. Kiplagat Kotut said that Moi University’s ambitious long-term plan to set up a 30 MW solar plant is one of its recovery strategies. The second phase of the solar project that is being implemented by Afriwatt Engineering Ltd, is expected to see the installation of a 51.7KW of Solar PV Grid tie Solution at a cost of KES 4.2 Million. This phase will increase power saving from 11.12% to 32.3% and reduce dependency on the grid by up to 36.9%.
“We want to be the university known for using clean energy almost exclusively for its operations. We also want to make clean energy available to the community. We will also be able to do training on clean energy. I am challenging the deans to start looking at this. We expect our researchers to look at unique challenges associated with clean energy and the innovations and technologies we can develop,” the Vice-Chancellor added.

Afriwatt Engineering Ltd CEO Thomas Cheruiyot urged other institutions of higher learning in Kenya and Africa to embrace clean energy as the perfect solution for the future.
“Even as we implement the tapping of clean energy in Moi University, Afriwatt is working towards a sustainable continent. The message that we are sending out is that Africa only needs to set up massive solar energy plants and spend many more years to come enjoying free clean energy,” Cheruiyot said during the launch of Moi University’s second phase of renewable energy project.
