Talanta Hela is an initiative by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports to nurture talents right from the grassroots level and monetize them for the youth to earn a decent livelihood from sports. The Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS), along with other stakeholders, is mandated to actualize the initiative.
Ever since the government took over the initiative through the ministry and funded it to the fullest, it has shown that, given the best interests of the government and stakeholders, Kenya is a source of talent.
Many of the young talents gathered could have never been featured on the national side were it not for Talanta Hela. The few that made it to the final cut could not have had exposure in Spain were it not for the government initiative.
All said and done, we are hoping that the initiative will be a long-lasting one, irrespective of the tenure that this government has since it was the initiative by this very government. The initiative should be embraced for a brighter future in sports.
It was not a miracle to see our representative in the 15th edition of the Costa Daurada Cup held in Salou, Spain, battle it out with one of the best academies in Spain. Spain is well known for producing young, talented players through their youth structures up to the professional level. The initiative gave the young lads the belief that they could be the best given a conducive environment.
Remember, the Talanta Hela team was a finalist in the competition after finishing as champions and runners-up in the U-19 boys and girls categories, respectively.
The urge by Kenyan sports enthusiasts to the government is to let the initiative continue and keep the standards high, free of corruption and age-cheating, for the better future of our young boys and girls.
This does not only go to the football fraternity; it should also be implemented in all other sports all over the country. We have a lot of talented kids out here who just need to be tapped and given a conducive environment to show the world what they can do. Remember, sports is also a career if taken very seriously.
