Particularly in Europe, there is a growing market for organic avocado, which are typically marked up by 25% to 45% on store shelves.
Through the numerous transmission channels, the unsettling reduction in economic activity and international transportation has disrupted and reduced the global supply for the fruit. Additionally, because avocado cultivation and trade are often labor-intensive, the extensively enforced physical distance measures have had an immediate negative impact on supply.

Brenda Kerubo, a Kenya journalist has faulted Kenyan avocado farmers over immature harvesting pointing out that the country needs to do the right thing to compete internationally. It is very difficult to buy Kenya when Kenya doesn’t play by the rules of the game.
“As a business journalist, l have written about the impact of Kenya’s unripe avocado exports in the international markets for about 10 years, from the farmers’ perspective and the government’s side. But today I will talk about my experience in buying the fruit abroad, specifically in Denmark,” she said.

She narrated that when she arrived in Denmark last August, she was always excited to see Kenyan avocados on the shelves but after a few purchases, her views changed to disappointments.
The journalist further narrated that they take up to a week or two to ripen, and then they ripen in patches. It starts with the top and then after three days, it spreads out. By the time it is “fully ripe” the top part is already rotten. Adding that avocados from Spain, Colombia, and Peru have very few to no defects.
“To be honest, you can never go wrong with these countries. Even when you buy five and eat them within the week, you will get the same taste and the fruit ripens uniformly, concerns over farmers harvesting avocados before their time,” she sadly revealed

She noted that although the Government of Kenya has on different occasions banned or restricted the exportation of avocados due to farmers not complying with the set standards, a different approach needs to be used to deal with the problem because “it is very difficult to buy Kenya when Kenya doesn’t play by the rules of the game.”
