A team player is someone who actively participates in their group to carry out tasks, achieve objectives, or oversee projects.
Being a team player has always been crucial for any team to achieve its goals. Just as teams used to share the same physical space, this is no longer a necessary condition, remote and hybrid teams are the norm now.
And this emphasizes the necessity to build cohesive teams that can withstand zoom meetings, time zones, asynchronous communication, and a lack of coffee breaks more than before.
According to Maria Luisa Engels a skilled and experienced certified NeuroChangeSolutions consultant, there are many definitions of the characteristics of highly effective teams. “I like the one by Patrick Lencioni, author of ‘The ideal team player’.”
Maria who has over 23 years of experience in corporate expert says Lencioni explained that successful teams exhibit five key behavior
- They build trust
- Master conflict
- Members are committee
- They are accountable
- Focus on results
She further explained that these behaviors are almost the byproduct of three virtue that the team acquires:
- Humanity (focus on the “we”)
- Hunger (learning and contribution mentality)
- Smart (in the sense of emotional intelligence)

“These virtues co-relate with one another if one is missing then the remaining two cannot be practiced well. Those who are only humble have no power of influence or persuasion. Only hunger they will be ‘bulldozers’ inconsiderate to others and ‘pushy’ for results. Only smart people are never real contributors,” she explained.
She however advised companies to consider hiring professionals with the said qualities, Assessing and developing staff to help incorporate missing virtues to all staff. Integrate the virtues in to the culture.

“However if the critical majority of members behave according to the three virtues, the others will necessarily have to adapt or become isolated from the rest or even drop out,” she concluded.
