A toxic workplace is where negative behaviours such as bullying, yelling, gas lighting, people pleasing, and discrimination are so intrinsic.
This is most dominant to a culture of the organization that there is lack of productivity, lack of trust, high stress levels, infighting, gossip; discrimination and witch-hunting become the norm.

Lillian Ngala, a Human Resource professional says in most cases, a toxic environment goes beyond one or two individuals adding that it is systemic.
She further explained that that makes a toxic work environment even more so; draining and demotivating. People in the organisation feel psychologically unsafe to do so much as speak for fear of punishment, humiliation and sidelining.
“Over time, your very stay at a toxic workplace can be detrimental to your health; giving you depression, panic attacks, insomnia and fatigue. So, how can you navigate your path in or out of a toxic environment?” she asked.

She highlighted some of the ways to navigate the toxic working environment.
- Address the point of conflict by identifying the point of toxicity which might be a boss or a team and having clear conversations to resolve issues.
- Do not conform to any behaviour that’s not in line with your beliefs. Safeguard your professionalism lest you are caught up in office gossip or outbursts.

- Ask yourself who can help you. Have someone you can trust.
- Have compassion for yourself. How others treat you is never about what you did or didn’t do. People can be mean based on their own insecurities.
