Alexandra Malika Ndolo, a German National born of a Kenyan father and a Polish mother, has decided to quit fencing for Germany, saying she is joining her late father’s home country, Kenya.
The renowned fencer, who is a guru in the sport, as she prides herself in winning many awards while competing for Germany, says from this season on, she will be fencing for Kenya.
It has always been her dream to introduce and further the game in Kenya; this made her a founder member of the Kenya Fencing Federation (KFF), which is the national governing body of the Olympics sport of fencing in Kenya, where she doubles up as the director of International Relations and National Development.
“This has been the most difficult decision of my fencing career. To everyone who has been a part of my journey in the past 15 years as a fencer for the German Fencing Federation, as an athlete for DOSB, as a member of the German Army’s sports division, as an athlete being supported by Deutsche Sporthilfe, thank you. To all my athlete friends on Team D, I will never stop rooting for you guys,” She wrote.
She continued to say, “To my new sports family from Team Kenya and the Kenya Fencing Federation – I can’t wait to go on this journey with all of you together! I can’t wait to meet even more of you and fight for glory alongside you. Let’s make it count, let’s make Kenya proud! Mimi ni Mkenya, na sisi ni Waafrika!!”
Fencing is a combat sport that involves fighting with a light thin sword, where winning points are made through the weapon’s contact with an opponent.
The 36-year-old athlete has always had a passion for the unique sport. She began focusing on it in 2007. This has led her to be the first woman of colour to represent Germany internationally.
Her late father, Dr Donal Ndolo, moved to Poland for his Master’s degree before proceeding to Germany for his doctorate studies, where he and his family settled.
