Kenyans are facing the toughest economic times following record inflation that has soared the prices of most commodities. A packet of maize flour now retails at KES 200.
Deputy President and Kenya Kwanza’s presidential candidate William Ruto took to social media to lament over the high cost of unga. He blamed some quarters in government for the unbearable cost of living.
“A packet of Unga is now retailing at a historic price of more than Sh200. It is sad. Millions of Kenyans are burdened by the high cost of living because of failure to put in place interventions such as farm inputs subsidy that could allow farmers produce enough to eat and surplus for sale.” Ruto said.
“Those crying about the crisis are responsible for this crisis due to their misplaced priorities. Kenya Kwanza — through its Bottom-Up Economic Plan — will address this problem,” The deputy president added.
Kenyans did not take Ruto’s statement lightly and slammed him for being part of the problem. The majority of online users insisted that he was the deputy president and that he could do something to salvage the situation. Others termed his promise as ‘fake’ since he was the second-in-command.
Here are some of the comments:
Strangeways Nyamu: “Says a fellow who discouraged farmers from maize farming while he was busy importing maize. The avocados you encouraged us plant are three years from maturity. Aren’t you the deputy president? Since 2018 you have been campaigning, absconding duty in the process. You’re riding on the excessive ignorance of the people you claim to fight for.”
Gatetua Nduati Wa Mugoiri: “Why don’t you skip a one-day campaign that costs you millions, reallocate the millions to buying unga and supply to wananchi, who you are cheating??? Your hypocrisy makes me hate you.”
George Nyongesa: “Let me teach you Global Economics 101. Kenya is part of the world. Most countries if not the whole world are experiencing inflation. For instance, there are riots in London and Washington DC because of sky-high commodity prices; worse still, a country called Sri Lanka is on verge of collapse because of the global economic crisis. Kenyan commodity price pinch is not an isolated problem, it’s not an administrative crisis, it is out the outcome of raging inflation. Global inflation has many economic causes but largely is a result of a fuel problem, the Russian war in Ukraine, the effects of Covid stimulus programs, etc. As you can see your suggestion for subsidy on farm inputs misses the mark. It is administering aspirin as a remedy to a patient with a septic wound. Global transport for commodities has been compromised by war and that worsens flow and prices. Economics is not like Karen Wash Wash enterprise which thrives on foolishness.”
David Wandewe: “Are you the deputy President of Uganda?”
Kennstar Muturi: “Funny how when it comes to government project you always say u did this and this but when fuel and food prices increase you are not involved, acha kutuenjoy bana!!!”
Japheth Juma: “And this is your government you are lamenting about…what of a helpless Kenyan? You are still earning a salary from their taxes without working, helping to raise the cost of living for being a ghost worker!”
Some Kenyans felt Ruto is not to be blamed for the high inflation rate in Kenya.
Evans Kafhekhe: “Dr William Ruto is the only presidential candidate who has displayed gestures to change country’s economy by coming up with economic forums that give Kenyans chances to raise issues concerning their regions, something that hasn’t been done even in world-class countries including United States of America! God bless Ruto.”
Juvenalis K. Opiyo: “Did I hear Raila saying he will continue with Uhuru’s legacy? Raila TAWE not unless we want to be given Suffering Certificate. The fruits of Fake Handshake. UhuruRaila delivers.”
Njeri Wa Muthoni: “Does even Baba know the price of Unga? Swear In Ruto ASAP!!!”
Simon Mbugua: “Thank you president in waiting. I am sure this will be a thing of the past in your leadership. We saw it happen when you were minister of agriculture. We still believe in your stewardship.”
