It is the love of every parent to give their children the best as they grow up and do parenting in their own way, but the extreme sometimes leads to unintended characters for the kids.
Growing up in a household with a parent who abuses alcohol is not a rare occurrence in Kenya and in most African homes. In fact, most of these kids grow up with many psychological problems, despite these problems, some parents go ahead and introduce their own kids to alcoholism.
Speaking in their reality show, Kyallo Culture, media personality Betty Kyallo admits that her own dad introduced her to alcoholism at an early age.
She describes her relationship with her dad as very tight, adding that her dad gave her her first sip of alcohol despite knowing the many challenges and dangers involved in alcohol use, such as health conditions, especially for the youth.
“My dad gave me my first sip of alcohol. We have a cordial relationship,” Betty said, adding that her father, Wilfred Kyallo separated from her mother, Julia Ngii when she was young.
Though some parents we talked to believe introducing their kids to alcohol isn’t a bad idea, most of them believe this might lead to raising an irresponsible person as they grow up.
“I cannot have control over parenting styles my fellow parents use, but to my personal views, let’s make our kids understand the effects of alcoholism, especially regarding their health. We should not introduce such substances to them, “Mrs Mary Kazdo, a mother of six, said.
She asked a question, “If a parent introduces a kid to alcoholism, what if she starts to use weed will you punish her?”
She, however, advised parents to raise their kids how they feel comfortable for them, saying every homestead has its unique way of handling matters.
