According to the African Union the African diaspora are individuals of African descent, regardless of citizenship or nationality, who reside outside of the continent and are prepared to contribute to its growth.
Some people who are part of the African diaspora were born in Africa but left it to pursue their education and job prospects abroad. Many people who have lived outside of Africa come back to contribute to the development of the continent’s economy and well-being.
African Talents Are Going Where They Are Rewarded – Vusi Thembekwayo
Burnaboy, a Nigerian singer insists that Africans in the diaspora should go back home and support their respective countries and get their roots in Africa.
“Let’s use America. The Chinese American has a base; he knows he’s from China. Italian Americas know where their grandparents came from in Italy. They know the first person from their family to come to America and start that line. Same goes to everyone else except the African Americans.”
Africans Must Fight For Free Movement of People – John Kofi Annan
He was replying to African Americans, who criticized him for encouraging African Americans to connect with their African roots. A group called Foundational Black (FBA) Americans says African Americans arrived in the USA from the Caribbean, and integrated with Native Americans before slavery.
“You all are such liars. FBA is not a group. It refers to the lineage of Black Americans who are descendants of American Slaves. Black Americans are Americans. America is our home. I have been to the African continent six times, you all are not united there. Fix that first,” Marcel for Congress said.
“This contradicts what he is saying. If “Africa” loved us, they would not seek to denigrate us at every opportunity. This publication lies about our ancestry, demonstrating the importance of delineation. You can cry all you want, but you can’t shame us for just being ourselves,” Mike Baggz wrote.
Just Brown replied to Mike’s comment saying, “Who are you if not Africans? Your root is still Africa no matter how much you try to shy away from it. If there’s any denigration it’s caused by you guys always looking down on Africans. Dividing yourselves while seeing it as “infra-dig” to identify as Africans.”
