It is rare for men to be infected by Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). On the contrary, close to 60% of women will experience one or more UTIs in their lifetime. One reason for this is due to the anatomical differences in urethra length between men and women.
According to a Urologist Prof. Peter Mungai, women have a significantly shorter urethra than men, making it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder. The urethra in women is also much closer to the anus than in men, which makes it easier for bacteria to wind up in the wrong place.

Dr Joan Okemo, Consultant Gynaecologist explains that peeing often and passing urine before and after sex can help protect you from Urinary Tract Infections adding that one should also observe hygiene.
“Pee before and after sex. When you use the bathroom, you’re flushing out the bacteria that are in your bladder and urethra. When done immediately after sex, you will reduce the chances of developing a urinary tract infection.”
“Don’t worry about running off to the bathroom right away, just make sure that you do so in a timely manner to get any bacteria out before it can reach your bladder,” she advised.

Dr Mungai explains that urinary tract infection affects sex performance in men adding that men get a lot of pain during ejaculation hence the physiological problems, especially with the pain they get at the pelvis.
“Some with severe cases can affect their reproduction permanently hence being unable to reproduce. This can make them end up seeing doctors for the rest of their lives due to chronic pelvic pain syndrome,” he explained.
He further stated that it is important to know the type of UTI because different bacteria are treated with different medications, especially in recurring cases.
UTI is caused by bacteria that get into the urinary tract. They mostly come from the skin around the anus. It is more common in girls because the urethra is closer to the anal opening
