Wendo Aszed, who is the founder and Executive Director of Dandelion Africa, decided to quit her job as a bank executive and dedicated herself to the welfare of women in rural areas after her best friend died of HIV-related disease.
“Since there is so much more to us than economic poverty, we have gone to those dark places and seen those light areas, and where we are going is so much more than where we have been. I think we should share our triumphant experiences rather than focusing on life’s sorrow,” she said.
Dandelion Africa is a grassroots innovator in Kenya that focuses on women and girls’ sexual and reproductive health, economic empowerment and advocacy on gender-based violence.
She explains that they gave more attention to the girls and neglected the boy, forgetting that they play a significant role in societal decision-making. Due to this, she and the team were compelled to include the boys in the projects, which they report has had a good effect on the local communities.
According to Wendo, she has more than 10 years of experience in locally driven, sustainable projects. She collaborates and works with women and young people, two of society’s most vulnerable groups, to enhance their health, economy, and educational opportunities through cutting-edge sustainable solutions.
“Through Dandelion we have managed to build a Level three Health Centre and set up over 40 Safe spaces for maternal child health and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR),” she mentioned.
Her Dandelion model, which is currently operating in Nakuru, Baringo, Kajiado and Narok counties, is simple; grow others as you grow.
