Unemployment has remained a serious problem in most parts of Africa. Politicians have mastered the art of using this as a tool to lure voters into voting for them, but immediately they are elected, they forget that it was among their key campaign agendas.
Many youths have been forced to do odd jobs for survival due to a lack of employment despite having achieved good grades at the university. They have decided to venture into unlawful behaviours for survival; some have even resorted to destroying their academic documents saying it is not of help to them.
Social media users are unhappy with Exploits University, a university in Malawi, revoking Bridget Thapwile Soko’s degree after she publicly burned her certificate, claiming she could not get a job despite having the certificate.
The video, shared on TikTok, went viral, forcing the Private University to publicly declare its stand on the issue. It pointed out that it was disappointed with the video because it tarnished the institution’s image.
Soko was awarded a degree in business administration upon completing a four-year course with the university but was heard in the video saying she had decided to burn it because she saw no value in it.
Many expressed their displeasure by saying the university’s reaction disreputes the institution. They explained that the university could have used the opportunity to show the world that the degree is not useless by helping the student secure a job opportunity.
They mentioned that revoking someone’s degree is a serious issue which emotions cannot drive. With a serious court battle, the university might incur many losses.
The users suggested that Africans must work together to empower people who have lost hope in the system. Additionally, many youths who have gone to school and have no jobs are committing suicide due to frustration.
