Mental illness affects both men and women, yet it is frequently ignored in men. Because males are much less likely than women to seek mental health therapy, their mental health frequently goes untreated, which increases the risk of depression and suicide among them.
There is a disproportionate discrepancy between the number of males with mental health illnesses and those seeking treatment due to stigma, despite the many available mental health treatment modalities and the public appeal specifically to men.
According to Tedd Josiah, a creative director from Kenya, the ‘boy child’ is being destroyed by cultural views. He also says that men should be handled with care because they are just regular people like everyone else.
Tedd said he was disappointed because society has failed to protect the male child as it does their female counterpart.
“All these I am going to highlight are untrue but even women themselves push on to men. Even our mothers make us feel all this,” he wrote.
- Boys don’t cry.
- Men should not have any trauma it’s not a thing.
- Suicide is for weak men. Yet 70% of all suicide are men.
- Body issues are for women, not men.
- No woman likes a weak man.
- A man should always have his shit together.
“After reading this to the end, I know we have a mother of a son, Aunty of boys, grandma of boys, sister to brothers we should show some care to speak up and secure the mental health of the gender called Boys and Men,” Tedd mentioned.
He advised men always to feel how they feel and never allow society’s pressure to demoralize them. He said it is okay for men to:
- Struggle mentally.
- Cry.
- Go to therapy.
- Have body image issues.
- Feel suicidal.
- Have trauma.
- Have insecurities.
