With the increased number of divorce applications and marriage separations, children from the said relationships end up being taken care of by either parent, hence putting most of the children in parenting dramas.
Kenyan musician Esther Akoth, commonly known as Akothee, has asked the Kenyan government to include a clause in the Marriage Act that will require women to get documented consent from their spouses, boyfriends and partners before getting pregnant.

This, she says, will help protect the innocent children from scenarios that may happen in case of disagreement or even separation, adding that this will also protect one party from falsely manipulating the other party after the divorce.
“I love the debate at the Kenyan law courts about marriage rules. A child is a full-time responsibility, and not a teddy bear that one can just dump and pick up later, subjecting them to a love triangle, making us raise many children in an undefined state of confusion,” Akothee, a mother to five children, wrote.

The Kenyan singer further added that some women use children as bait to hold the man down, and some men equally use children to attract women, yet they know clearly they don’t mean it, lamenting that the ratio of children brought up in a ‘confused’ family set up is bigger than children born under marriage umbrella.
“For us to have a clearer understanding, I think a document should be signed about bringing a child into the world. My Docket of Single Parenthood is overwhelming, and I just wonder how the population grows every day,” the musician lamented.

She also advised parents that getting pregnant can’t make one a mother. Similarly, getting someone pregnant doesn’t make you a daddy, explaining that a child comes with full responsibility that should be shared equally.
“Spouses should also stop using children as a weapon to get to each other’s neck. We are raising a bitter, confused generation instead of showing them love. It’s all violence from the date of conception to the end,” the mother of five said.
