Alex Vonce, a social media user, has come out to argue that a laundry lady ‘mama fua’ is more economical and efficient than owning a washing machine.
He further explained that a washing machine is nice to have but a laundry lady ‘mama fua’ has several benefits compared to a machine. As much as others support the argument others maintain it is a way of having secret affairs with the ladies.
“A washing machine is very economical in any household. I have had one since 2011 and I recently upgraded to newer features like air wash among others that laundry lady can’t do unless people have other duties with mama fua,” Martoh Murithi wrote.
“Just say a ‘mama fua’ will offer ‘extra’ services,” Ngugi Macharia said.
Joseph Irungu opposed the narrative saying he was not sure how the mathematics was done and reached the conclusion, insisting that a machine consumes a few token units, worth KES 100 enough but a ‘mama fua’ will charge an average KES 500 for their services.

Macharia Wanjeri said the only advantage of ‘mama fua’ is the other house cleaning but as for laundry, a washing machine should always be the option at hand.
“Those who actually own a washing machine know the benefit of having it. I get to clean the rest of my house by myself and with depths that ‘mama fua’ will never get to for KES 400- KES1000 per session. Unless you actually own a washing machine continue commenting,” Her Metrix advised.

“The laundry lady should use your machine if you have one. That way she does other things such as cleaning the house and making a meal for those so inclined as it does the laundry. That’ll free up time for sorting, folding and ironing. You’ll use it when alone/in the company,” SP Kaniu added.
Esbon Gakuo mentioned that outside Nairobi and other major towns where labour can be a pretty penny, it just doesn’t make sense to own a washing machine. ‘Mama fua’ does all the chores in the house for Ksh300-400.
He further advised people to always support the local economy by having the ‘mama fua’ do the clothes and other house chores.
