Jessikah Inaba has broken the “triple-glazed glass ceiling” by becoming the country’s first black and blind lawyer, creating legal history. Her route to accomplishing this feat was difficult, but she persisted with the help of her family and friends.
The 23-year-old from Camden, North London, graduated last week following five years of study at the University of Law in London, where she completed her whole degree in Braille.
During her five-year path to becoming a barrister, Inaba, registered blind, overcame numerous hurdles. She had to study harder than her friends to acquire legal language and memorize the layout of courtrooms and the faces of the judges. Despite this, she never lost sight of her ambition to become a barrister.
“Even though many people doubted my abilities, I always knew I wanted to be a barrister, it was difficult at times, and I considered giving up, but my supportive family gave me courage and strength,” Inaba remarked.
Inaba was born with a unique genetic disease that caused her to lose her sight gradually; she was fully blind at the age of 12. This, however, did not deter her from pursuing her aspirations.

She explains that she encountered numerous challenges, including a dearth of readily available resources and technology but opted to persist, though, with the aid of her family and friends, who assisted her in reading and researching.
Her path to becoming a barrister was fraught with financial difficulties. To pay for her studies, she had to work part-time, and her family had to take out loans to support her. They never lost trust in her, though, and continued to encourage her throughout her trip.
“I’m very grateful for the love and support of my family and friends, who never gave up on me. Without their assistance, I would not have been able to reach this historic milestone,” Inaba added.

Her accomplishment has opened opportunities for those who may have previously believed that the legal profession was not for them. She hopes that her tale will motivate others to pursue their aspirations, no matter what obstacles they face.
