Young people go through a lot of frustrations from family members when they want to get married, especially when their partners are not financially stable.
Dr Stephen Akintayo, an influential investment coach and an entrepreneur from Nigeria, narrates his ordeal after his father-in-law said no to him marrying his daughter due to his financial status.
“It was one of the hardest decisions of my life. Her dad said, “No!” My own family questioned, since her dad said no, what’s the point of going ahead?” Akintayo lamented.
“Her dad said, I was not responsible enough to take good care of his daughter, I didn’t have enough money nor from a big family. Though I was born into a poor family, a wealthy family has come out of my loins today,” he narrated.
Dr Akintayo explained that he worked hard to prove him wrong. This is why he came up with a quote; “People don’t hate you, they hate your poverty.” Today, he says, he is in the good books of his ‘father-in-love’. Poverty is a disease that everyone should avoid.
Ten years ago, his business was young and barely successful. He says their combination isn’t perfect, but their forgiveness was perfect.
“We were young and naïve but our actions were mature, such that in 10 years, no one had ever settled issues for us. We have negotiated our way into a peaceful home even though we are both different and flawed, but we have created our own paradise,” he said.
Dr Akintayo states that they didn’t have money, but he told her wife 13 years ago, when he asked her to marry him, that he will take her around the world and put her on Television. He is glad that he has kept to his word by the grace of God.
He explains that they are currently having a business that is employing a number of people, and they are living happily with his family despite the challenges they experienced earlier
