I was Picked as an Abandoned Baby On the Streets – Rabia Bibi Osman

It is always a joy for a kid to be born and taken good care of, but for Rabia Bibi Osman, a Senior Privacy and Compliance Analyst at Nike, this didn’t happen as she expected.

28 years ago, Rabia Bibi Osman was abandoned in a baby carriage at the Edhi Orphanage in Karachi, Pakistan. Mrs Bilquis Edhi picked her up and took care of her. Unfortunately, she died recently, leaving her orphaned again.

Mrs Edhi named Osman after her mother, Rabia Bano, forged her identity and then gave her a home to stay in.

Osman says although her biological mother abandoned her, God sent another caring and loving family which has been taking good care of her since she was young.

“Because of you today, I am somebody, I have an identity, and I have loving parents to call my own. You fought for women’s rights; you were an activist, a philanthropist, a rebel for the good cause. You taught me the power of woman, to always have an unwavering sense of self and to be unapologetically ambitious. Your loss has made me feeling orphaned again today,” she wrote.

She continued to praise Mrs Edhi, saying because of her, a little Pakistani girl orphaned at birth dared to dream.

“Because of you I am an independent woman with a graduate level education and a place in the world to call my own. You gave me an opportunity. You awarded me a chance to dream, and you presented me with freedom,” she said.

She added that the world knew her guardian as Bilquis Edhi, but she knew her as Bari Amma (Elder mother). She also went ahead to appreciate her father (Edhi’s husband), who she says made sure she had everything a little girl could have ever asked for.

“I went to a great high school, got scholarships throughout college, did an internship in NYS Assembly, Bronx District Attorney’s Office, US Congress, US Senate and went to law school to pursue masters in Cyber security and Data Privacy Law, all because of you,” She added.

She described Mrs Edhi as a hero mother not only to her but also to many Pakistan orphans and a powerhouse for humanity too.
