Martha Karua has, in recent times, been on news headlines more than before. This was catalyzed by presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s decision to name her as his running mate under the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance Party.
Recently, Raila Odinga’s visit to Kirinyaga County and particularly to Martha’s home gave Kenyans an opportunity to see and know the iron lady’s mother, Mama Josephine Karua.
Raila was happy to meet Martha’s mother and even shared photos of their interactions.
“Good seeing Martha’s Mother, Mama Josephine Karua, jovial and in high spirits. It was a pleasure,” Raila wrote.
Martha Karua is considered to be Raila’s bet in winning Mt. Kenya votes. The two have been crisscrossing several counties in the Central region in a bid to secure the support of Mt Kenya people. A few days ago, Martha Karua promised to be a good deputy.
The iron lady also praised Raila Odinga for choosing her to be his running mate just after the two took opposite sides on the constitutional amendment push under the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). Martha opposed the amendment, while Raila supported it with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Raila knows that sometimes, I take a stand if it is on principle where I may not be moved. It takes a courageous and strong man to pick a strong woman and I salute him for that. He was not looking for a praise choir. He was looking for people who could offer alternative ideas,” Martha added.
The two candidates face stiff competition from Deputy President William Ruto and his running mate Rigathi Gachagua. The two have held numerous economic forums in various counties and recently launched their manifesto. Ruto has been a sharp critic of Raila Odinga, saying he cannot transform Kenya and free it from the yoke of tough economic times.
On his part, Rigathi Gachagua was once quoted saying Martha Karua cannot secure Central Kenya voters for Raila.
“Kama rais wetu ambaye ako kwa kiti alishindwa kupeleka nyinyi kwa kitendawili, huyo mama ndio ataweza,” Rigathi said in one of the political rallies.
Voters will decide on who takes on the mantle from President Uhuru Kenyatta on 9th August 2022.
