Switzerland star Breel Embolo fascinated football fans after scoring a lone goal against Cameroon in the 2022 FIFA World Cup that is ongoing in Qatar. Despite playing against his country of birth, where his father and mother come from, Breel did what was supposed to be done to Cameroon.
Embolo’s mother, Germaine, defended her son’s performance in the match that gave Switzerland three crucial points. Her statement came after Cameroon nationals took issue with Embolo’s goal, denying Cameroon victory in the game.
According to her, Embolo was nurtured by Switzerland and therefore deserved to play for them.
“Leave my son alone. Where was Cameroon when Swiss took him and trained him? You should instead talk about your own players and the national team where you have to pay money before you can be called up,” she said.
Embolo, 25, chose not to celebrate the goal and stood while lifting his hand. His teammates, however, came to celebrate with him for changing their score sheet during the match.
After the 1-0 defeat, the Indomitable Lions coach Rigobert Song said he would have wished to have Embolo on his side, but that’s not how it went.
“I am happy for him and proud of him. He is my little brother. We have often spoken to each other on phone,” Song added.
“I wanted to play for my native country, they told me that my father must negotiate with the minister,” Embolo told the press.
Embolo plays as a forward for the French top-tier league club AS Monaco. He has scored seven (7) goals in the French League 1, one (1) for the UEFA Europa League, two (2) for the UEFA Nations League and 12 goals for Switzerland’s national football team.
Embolo started professional football in 2013 at the Swiss Super League side, Basel. He scored 31 goals for the club. In 2016, he joined Bundesliga’s Schalke 04. After three seasons with Schalke, he moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2019. He joined his current club, AS Monaco, during the 2022-2023 transfer window.
Breel Embolo has dual nationality. He is Cameroon-born Swiss. Moise Kegni is the father of Embolo, who plays for the Switzerland national team. His mother is Germaine Embolo.
