Even if corpses are strange, the dead ones hold the true mystery. It’s challenging to distinguish facts from fantasy since most of us simply don’t spend that much time with them. Corpses have long been associated with both epidemics and magical healing properties.
“Working with dead bodies is probably the easiest part of my job although people are very sceptical about our career, there is also the sidelining part of it and many people judge wrongly due to ignorance,” Ann Mwangangi, a mortician, said.

Ann revealed that working as a mortician has all sorts of morbid connotations, death, and particularly dead bodies, is scary to a lot of people. Corpses are the source of inspiration for countless horror films, and are often concomitant with mental health problems like anxiety and depressive disorders, which are often rooted in a fear of death.
As a result, life as a mortician is still shrouded in mystery, with few people understanding what the job really entails.

Ann added that with trauma, especially getting bodies in a very bad state, you learn on the job and that most fears and trauma are handled while working.
She went ahead to discredit some of the myths and misconceptions people have about her job as a mortician saying not everyone takes drugs before attending to the corpse.

She said that the job has taught her to be kind because she doesn’t know about tomorrow. She also advised people to live their lives fully because they don’t know about their next move.
The work of mortuary attendants revolves around collecting and transporting bodies from the wards to the mortuary, taking note of and recording the time of death and the time the body is taken to the mortuary. They then either prepare and store bodies in the fridge or take them for postmortem during which they assist pathologists to carry out autopsies. They also hand over bodies for disposal, burial or cremation.
