Zero Emission Mobility (ZEM) is the world’s first carbon-neutral electric automobile, created by a team of Eindhoven University of Technology students. ZEM is powered by a rechargeable battery that is charged by solar panels on the roof.

To meet the challenge, 35 students from the research university focusing in engineering science and technology created and built this vehicle.

The more one drives, the more carbon dioxide is absorbed; with emissions from driving cars accounting for around 50% of global greenhouse gas emissions, this might be revolutionary for our planet.

Other advantages of the ZEM include lower fuel costs, less time spent at the pump, and a regenerative braking system. However, ZEM cannot be used with traditional fossil fuel vehicles. I has a top speed of only 37 mph and a power output of 22 KW.

The students were demonstrating to the world and the industry that circular designs and builds not only reduce carbon emissions but also absorb carbon as the car moves.

Although electric vehicles do not emit CO2 on the road, the process of producing their lithium batteries can generate significant amounts of CO2. Carbon is also frequently emitted during the generation of the electricity that finally powers the batteries of an EV.

“When these filters can be made modularly, they can be implemented into every type of vehicle, every type of transportation,” Lars Holster, an Eindhoven student, told CNET.

Solar panels on the roof and hood supply around 15% of ZEM’s power to eight lithium batteries. A regular plug-in connection is also available behind the rear license plate. The team developed bi-directional charging technology, allowing ZEM to be utilized as a generator to power household appliances.

The students developed the car to be environmentally friendly over its full existence. The body is 3D-printed from recyclable plastics that can be shredded and repurposed when the automobile is no longer needed. The pineapples were used to make the interior, and the dash was formed from discarded cooking oils.
