In a heartbreaking incident that highlights the challenges faced by African diaspora in supporting their loved ones back home, a man named Sam experienced a tragic loss when his grandmother passed away after receiving inadequate healthcare.

Determined to prevent such preventable tragedies, Sam has launched a platform called Fleri, which allows Africans in the diaspora to directly pay for the healthcare of their family members in Africa.

Sam’s grandmother fell ill in 2020, and despite his family in the United States sending money for her treatment, she sought the services of a traditional healer instead of a hospital. The following day, she tragically passed away.

This devastating event prompted Sam to reflect on the difficulties faced by African diaspora when supporting their families in Africa. Millions of Africans send money back home each year however, the funds are not always utilized appropriately, especially when it comes to medical emergencies.

Recognizing the need for a more efficient and effective system, Sam established Fleri. Unlike traditional money transfers, Fleri allows diaspora members to directly pay for the healthcare of their loved ones in Africa through a subscription-based platform.

The service provides Family Care Managers who act as the point of contact for the family in their home country, offering assistance in navigating the healthcare system and ensuring high-quality care for their loved ones.

The impact of Fleri has been transformative for its members, including individuals like Fred and his father. Fred, residing in Ohio, USA, has a 94-year-old father living in Ghana.

Through Fleri, Fred’s family care manager now coordinates quarterly check-ups for his father, ensuring regular and proactive healthcare. As a result, his father’s health has improved significantly, and he appears vibrant and healthy at the age of 94.

Sam’s personal experience of losing his grandmother due to inadequate healthcare has motivated him to build a world where preventable health issues do not result in the loss of loved ones. His mission with Fleri is to empower Africans in the diaspora to shift from emergency medical situations to preventative care for their families.
