Africans have been called upon to reconsider their dietary habits in relation to starch consumption.

Alexandra Tchomte, the founder, Managing Director and partner of La Grande Royale in Nigeria, emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet, highlighting that “your health is what you eat.”

The plea comes as Tchomte raises concerns about the lack of green vegetables and excessive starches, commonly found on African dining tables.

Expressing her surprise, Tchomte notes, “I can’t even see any green colour on that table. No vegetables? Later, the belly won’t be able to digest the whole thing, and they will have nightmares at night. Only to accuse the wizards of the village who didn’t do anything.”

She further alludes to the tendency of individuals to attribute health issues to supernatural causes rather than addressing dietary imbalances.

In her message, she stresses that good health is not a result of magic but conscious dietary choices, advocating for a reduction in salt, sugar, and oil consumption while increasing the intake of vegetables, fruits, white proteins, and unrefined carbohydrates.

“Generally, everything is good, but eat balanced,” she advised, adding that the importance of a balanced diet cannot be overstated.

Consuming excessive starches without sufficient variety from other food groups can lead to nutritional deficiencies and health complications. Tchomte’s call to action aims to raise awareness about the significance of incorporating a diverse range of nutrients into everyday meals.

Nutrition experts emphasize the benefits of a balanced diet. Consuming adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables provides essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre necessary for overall well-being.

Additionally, reducing the intake of refined carbohydrates and incorporating healthier alternatives contributes to improved health outcomes. As Tchomte’s plea continues to resonate, it’s believed that Africans will take heed of her advice and make conscious choices to enhance their health and well-being.
