As many people like to put it, ‘mother’s love can never be compared with anything else’, a mother will always be there for her children even if they are grown-ups. Even with continuous disappointment, they will still be there to support them.
For Harrison Mwaura Irungu, a trained addiction counsellor from Nakuru, alcoholism and gambling made him lose his banking job, wife, child, savings and all the businesses but his mother stood strong by his side to ensure he overcame the addiction.

He says his mother would always look for him whenever he had gone to drink, “her health deteriorated because of me but today I have restored that relationship with her she is happy.”
The banker narrated that he started drinking cheap alcohol when he was in class seven around 14 years old, this went on even in secondary school, where he used to take ‘changaa” (traditional brew) in school which contributed to his performance drop.
He further elaborated that in high school he was already in the social stage two but after joining the university he gradually entered stage three addiction, where he could not control himself.
He was suspended from work due to alcoholism but he was reinstated later. After five years of not taking alcohol, someone introduced him to betting this was what turned his life upside down. He lost over Ksh1.2 million on betting.
At this point, gambling had replaced alcoholism. He used to take money from the bank which he was working thinking he would win a jackpot and repay it, unfortunately, it accumulated to 1.2 million and he was risking a 14-year jail term.
“After sorting the issue and repaying the money through the help of some people, I lost my job, my dad died and the frustration landed me back to alcoholism. I used to vomit bile every day in the morning despite this I could not eat anything unless I got cheap liquor,” the counsellor explained.

After all, he was going through he went to a rehabilitation centre for the third time and this time round he decided to reform completely without return. He asked the government to have more education on those who are addicted rather than having laws like closing pubs because people will still get the drinks elsewhere.
