Dr Salim M. Ishmael, a medical doctor has explained that it is not laziness for ladies to choose Cesarean Delivery on Maternal Request (CDMR) in the absence of any medical condition.

He further elaborated that the obstetric contraindication for attempting vaginal delivery is the most frequently cited reason for the increasing incidence of cesarean section (CS) deliveries.

He also mentioned that fear of giving birth vaginally, fear of complications for the child, previous traumatic births, depression, abuse, and other psychosomatic/psychiatric reasons, fear of lack of support, unresolved psychosomatic or sexual conflict, fear of losing control are some of the reasons women opt for CS.

“Therefore it is understandable why women opt for CS but it is up to us medical practitioners to educate them on both positive and negative effects and not be driven by financial hunger.” Dr Ishmael said.

“We men don’t understand half of what the ladies go through and we have to be compassionate and understanding when it comes to matter childbirth. I hope the ignorance will be eradicated,” he said.

Cesarean delivery is the delivery of a fetus through surgical incisions made through the abdominal wall and the uterine wall. Over the years there has been a significant rise in the number of CS delivery, therefore ‘overused’.

Dr Ishmael narrated that the increased rates of cesarean section are due to changed risk profiles for expectant mothers and fetus as well as an increase in cesarean section by maternal request. Some indications include labour dystocia, abnormal or indeterminate fetal heart rate tracing, fetal malpresentation, multiple gestations, and suspected fetal macrosomia.

“This overlooks the fact that a cesarean section is a surgical procedure with complications for both mother and child like infection, organ injuries, blood transfusion, post-partum thromboembolic complications, uterine rupture, infertility, placenta previa, increta, or accrete,” he mentioned.
