The message of investing in sustainable solutions to combat poverty in Africa is a call to action for everyone to contribute to the betterment of society.
With many youths’ vision and determination, some are paving the way for a brighter future and proving that change is possible, one step at a time.
In a remarkable commencement address at her Alma Mater, Nelly Cheboi, the 2022 CNN Hero of the Year, delivered an inspiring message about investing to sustainably combat poverty in Africa.
With her own experiences serving as a catalyst for change, Cheboi emphasized the importance of taking action and forgiving oneself for mistakes along the way. Recalling her upbringing and the sacrifices her mother made to ensure her education, she realized the harsh reality faced by many in her community.
“Despite obtaining degrees and even masters, numerous individuals remained unemployed. This realization propelled me to visualize a solution – using a $1 million donation to create employment opportunities and address the systemic issues that perpetuate poverty in rural Kenya,” she said.
Having worked as a junior software engineer and aspiring to climb the corporate ladder, the professional engineer recognized the potential impact she could make as a top executive.
Motivated by her vision, Cheboi left her corporate job and founded Technographic, an organization dedicated to providing employment opportunities and sustainable solutions to poverty.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared her experience of building a school in her junior college years. Initially optimistic about fundraising efforts, she faced a harsh reality when only $300 was raised.

“Undeterred, I found alternative ways to make my dream a reality. Overcoming challenges became a turning point in my life, instilling in me the confidence and courage to tackle bold initiatives.” She narrated.
She continued investing in the school project, what started as four classrooms grew into a four-story community center, providing children with opportunities and resources she wished she had during her own childhood.
