Just Get the Work Done “Coming to the Office at 9 am or Working From Home is Not My Focus” – Maryben Omollo

In 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak affected labour markets all around the world. The immediate effects were abrupt and frequently negative: As offices closed, millions of individuals were laid off or lost their employment, and others quickly adapted to working from home.

Maryben Omollo, an entrepreneur and a mental health advocate, says employees should take good care of themselves as much as they work hard to ensure they meet targets, adding that employees’ workplaces should not be a big deal to an employer.

“I don’t care whether you come into the office at 9 am, if you choose to work from home or not or if you work from the garage while they fix your car. Most times I personally wake up and all I want is to work from the café,” she wrote.

“I hired you for a job and I trust you to get it done, just let me know what you need from me to be successful in your role and I will show up for you,” the mental health advocate said.

She added that employees should not justify why they need a day off, they don’t need to explain how sick their child is to leave early, adding that people should not apologize for having a personal life.

“Yes, I care about results but I also care about you. We are all human and we are all adults. I lead people. I don’t run an adult day care centre,” she added.

She advised those hiring to agree on deliverables and be crystal clear, select the right people, provide the necessary support tools and get out of their way and trust their process.

She pointed out that it’s all about outputs not how long one sits in a room. An employee could go to the office from 8 am to 5 pm and still achieve nothing, saying performance should not be measured by how long one stays in the office but by whether or not they meet targets.
